Statue of Liberty and Liberty Island evacuated after propane tanks catch fire

Liberty Island and the Statue of Liberty were evacuated Monday after an apparent construction mishap sparked a fire in propane tanks there, according to the National Parks Service.

Two or three propane tanks were on fire, officials said, and the FDNY responded to the incident.

The blaze has since been extinguished but the propane tanks still need to cool.

The National Parks Service said it was evacuating all of Liberty Island.
