Lawsuit: Hospital pressured Illinois woman to have abortion

A woman has filed a lawsuit alleging an Illinois hospital paid her $2,000 to have an abortion after she was mistakenly administered a drug that could cause birth defects.

The (Peoria) Journal Star reports that Reneizha Morris’ lawsuit was filed Thursday against UnityPoint Health-Methodist hospital in Peoria County Circuit Court. The 23-year-old Peoria woman is seeking more than $50,000 in damages.

The suit alleges Morris didn’t want the abortion but felt pressured by the hospital’s risk management team. Her attorney, Thomas Mulroy III, says the hospital wanted to “eliminate evidence of their mistake.”

Morris says she was given Methotrexate after she was admitted for a psychiatric evaluation when she was early in her pregnancy. The lawsuit alleges the hospital’s legal team got involved when she decided to carry the child to term.

Methodist spokesman Fabiola Orozco says the hospital doesn’t comment on pending litigation.
