A Texas prosecutor says a 39-year-old man killed six members of his ex-wife’s family as part of a plan to harm anyone who had helped the woman.
Ronald Lee Haskell is charged with capital murder in the July 2014 shootings.
Harris County prosecutor Samantha Knecht said in opening statements Monday that for two days Haskell stalked his ex-wife’s family in the Houston area.
Authorities say he then confronted Stephen and Katie Stay at their home and fatally shot them and four of their children.
He also shot the Stay’s oldest daughter, who was 15 at the time. She suffered a head wound, played dead and then notified police.
Haskell’s defense team admits he killed the six but says he was severely mentally ill and didn’t know his actions were wrong.
