just back from Florida, the devastation flying over one community, in particular, Mexico beach. So many homes gone, pulled off the foundation and there is news coming in, discovery and what rob Marciano has just learned. The death toll had been rising, more than a dozen dead. And rescues elsewhere. Survivors pulled out by helicopter in places. Trapped vehicles and this is before it made land fall and this is what it looked like after ward. Meteorologist rob Marciano is on the scene tonight. What authorities have told him moments ago. Reporter: Tonight, time is running out to find survivors in the storm zone. Customs and border protection using blackhawk helicopters to rescue two residents from Panama City, hoisting them to safety. The area, impossible to reach by vehicle. Officials tonight say many areas are just too dangerous for people to return to. As we make our way into Mexico beach, you can see destruction everywhere you look. This is where Michael made landfall. That 14 foot storm surge and those 155 mile an hour winds. This is where the wind and surge were strongest, ripping these homes right off their foundations, and carrying them in some cases hundreds of yards inland. The stronger, higher buildings remain but the expanse of the destruction is mindboggling. Emily Hansen and her mother, shellshocked by the devastation. Truly devastating. Everyone we knew lost their house. Everybody. And their jobs. Reporter: Daniel Krupp reluctantly decided to ride out the storm with his wife and their dog Leo. We didn’t want to be here. We had to come home because we had the animals here and we had people watching the animals. The storm increased so rapidly, we didn’t have time to get out of here. Reporter: He is lucky to be alive. Today E we saw teams and Michael drenching Virginia and the Carolinas with more than nine inches of rain in spots. Triggering widespread flash flooding and rescuing, killing at least eight people including a firefighter. Well over a million without power tonight. Some estimates, nearly $4.5 billion. With so many homes gone, they might find additional victims and you just talked to the fire chief there? I did, just a few moments ago, the Florida fire chief in charge of search and rescue, and the first fatalities here in Mexico beach. They are sending an additional search team out to search for the person who was believed to have been with the deceased and seeing the mounds of debris, I can only imagine this won’t be the last we hear of fatalities.
