Finally tonight our person of the week. The surprise for a hero. Reporter: Duane Sherman was 19 years old when he enlisted to fight in ww II, serving aboard the “Uss Lamson,” a destroyer. It saw several battles in the pacific. And at 96, he still vividly remembers the battle that earned him a purple heart. The flames from the crash engulfing the bridge. 30 shipmates lost their lives that day. Duane would return home, he would raise a family, and now turning 96, he doesn’t look it, but jokes — I sometimes feel it. Reporter: Over the years, Duane has lost many friends and comrades, but he still asks, have you checked the mail? He doesn’t get any mail that’s for him other than a bill. Reporter: Duane’s daughter, sue Morris got an idea. I wanted him to feel special on his birthday. Reporter: She put out a call on Facebook asking for birthday cards for her father. And look at the message she sent us tonight, and put out there for so many others who wrote — Hi, everybody. Ok, we’re at the post office. This whole bin of gifts is for dad. 60,000 birthday cards and counting. All 50 states. All over the world. And then, the delivery in person. We’ll never change our course. Reporter: A dozen Navy chiefs diving for hours to celebrate Duane. They needed men in a hurry. Reporter: He was sharing stories and this generation grateful. Very humbling and very awesome.
